First, you need a smart phone with a camera. It can’t be one of those Strawberry or Blueberry phones with the clickety-clack keyboard or a stupid phone like the burners on HBO’s critically-acclaimed dramatic series The Wire. It has to be smart and with camera.

Things should be pretty clear from the opening slideshow unless you’re a complete idiot or our sweet, 92 year-old grandmother who’s still figuring out her DVD player. Basically, open EverRate, take a picture (or select a picture from your Camera Roll), give it a rating with the star slider, and add a description and location. Your amazing picture gets an equally-amazing rating and description overlay while EverRate magically turns your rating, description, and location info into hashtags. You can then share your picture and all these extra goodies on your favorite social sites.

Well then, get some blinds. We live in Amsterdam and over here you either get some blinds or you get over it. Just kidding, we don’t keep your information. Not in a huge, air-conditioned server warehouse. Nor on an external hard drive in our bedroom. You don’t have to log-in. You don’t have to add a location. You don’t even need to add a description or rate your picture. (But, if that’s where you’re at…maybe we can suggest a different app?)

Our goal is to make it easier for Present You to create and share hashtags that will help Future You. Imagine quickly scanning pictures of every 5-star burrito in Encinitas, California or York Beach, Maine…or Dahab, Egypt. Get the idea?

If all hell breaks loose, you can always erase or change any of your tags before posting to a social network. Nothing is posted anywhere when you hit the “Share” button to leave EverRate.

We agree that picture after picture of what your friends ate for lunch or dinner can be annoying. Almost as annoying as a feed full of selfies, cats, or babies. We made EverRate so you could rate anything. On holiday and staying at a new hotel? Rate it. Saw an amazing play at a small theatre Off Broadway? Rate it. Climbing Mt. Everest? Rate it. In the hospital for acute altitude sickness? Rate it.

People used to signal class by displaying their leisure. But in this fast-paced world, photographing our food is one of the few ways left to express awesomeness. Kobe steak and champagne on a Tuesday night? Translation: “I have clients. I have a corporate card. I rule.” Vegan and raw ruby kraut with white radish and avocado? Translation: “I’m so wildly healthy that my inner beauty and discipline will make you regret those McDonald’s french fries for weeks.” To us, this is stupid.

We made EverRate to give the food picture what it never had…Utility. Take a picture, name the dish, rate it. Tell the world what you had and what you thought about it. Our goal is to increase world productivity by eliminating the time wasted rummaging through menus. Do you want wordy descriptions of your food? Or do you want pictures? How about pictures with ratings from real people – your friends, locals, classy types with much better taste than you?

Smart phones and the camera apps that love them have democratized photography as an art. There are people from all walks of life who consistently blow our minds with their photos. (Check out our Pinterest board [hyperlink to http://pinterest.com/everrate/instagram/] for examples.) This point was one of our biggest challenges when developing EverRate – How do we make a picture overlay that doesn’t distract from the picture? In the end, we couldn’t find an answer.

The best solution we can offer is to use EverRate where it fits. For example, we watch the news for information, but it’s not usually beautiful. Conversely, we might watch a French film because it’s beautiful, but we have no idea what’s going on. [Please read the following in a David Attenborough voice.] Every so often, we come across something full of beauty and information. This is where EverRate fits. And this is up to you to create.

Gosh, we hope not. We saw that movie and it did NOT end well.
